This week I want share some pics of this totally bizarre caterpillar we found in our backyard. It was so weird-looking and had these kooky protrusions (antennae?) that made it look like a snake tongue plus markings that look like eyes! Check it out:
Have you ever seen anything like that before? The funny thing is that one of our local weathermen has this nightly thing where people email him "weather pics"--nature shots, etc. and he puts them on the air. So he used our caterpillar pics one night and it ended up being this really funny bit of banter with the weather guy and the news anchors. My husband and I were laughing so hard we were crying!

I've trained myself to look away when your site pops up and then I know how many clicks to move right and down to avoid the clown.
That awesome bug made the news? How cool for you guys! Let's hope all your MCRish peeps stay off the news, too!
And as always, thanks for playing ;)
I have seen a caterpiller like that before. It was pretty cool. It is a defense mechanism to keep predators away.
I honestly thought it was a fake bug you placed until you told us about the weatherman story. It really is an odd looking bug. Good pic! Found you through Carrie.
They are so colorful that they look fake. Amazing.
If I found that in my yard I would call 911 and say their has been an ailien invasion...OMG it's so freaky...yikes but my boys would be in heaven!
Freaky is definitely the word for it! Can't let my 6-year-old see that or she'll want one.
That is pretty freakish - in a cool sort of way. Found you on Candid Carrie.
what a cool bug! It almost looks like one of those money tree caterpillars
that thing is freaky looking!
Must be a cross bred!
That is the weirdest bug I have ever seen!!
I, too, found you on Candid Carrie!
That picture is wild! Thanks for visiting me today. I love your blog layout. I'm thinking of going with that designer (Shauna?). You may have just sealed the deal for me. Thanks! :-)
The photo is so beautiful!!!
Have a great week-end!
That doesn't even look real. & my gosh...what kind of a camera do you have?
That isthe FREAKIEST looking thing I have EVER seen! LOL
You have an AWESOME camera!!! LOVE that you were able to get such a close shot of the creepy thing!
:) Debi
Thanks Everyone for stopping by!
And, Tressa, I have a Nikon D-80. It's an awesome camera!
That caterpillar is amazing! I love it! It looks like something out of a cartoon! Is it weird that the clown at the top of the page scares the crap out of me?? LOL!!
What great pictures!!! Thanks for stopping by! I will be back...BTW-are your 5 kids in that order-4 boys then 1 girl? If so, it gives me hope with my 3 boys!
Awesome picture, but that is one freaky little bug!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog!!
Billie--Don't worry--you are not the first one afraid of my pet clown!
Therese--Yes! 5 boys then a girl. There's definitely hope!!
Is that a catipillar or an alien? To creepy looking for me.
OMG I'm with Carrie here, I'm NOT a fan of clowns, LOL But I'm a big girl and I'll do my best to deal;)~
That is for real a real life caterpillar you had in your yard? Get out!!! When my son gets home I am going to need to remember to show him this, he is my buggy kid...this will, no doubt, impress him more than you know! LOL
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
that does look freaky??
Seriously, that thing is for reals? It looks like a toy.
From the side, he's kinda cute! He looks so tiny, how on earth did you ever spot him?
He was totally for realz! My son (Gooser)spotted him when we were playing outside. He really wanted to keep him and we brought him in and let him crawl around on the kitchen counter for awhile, but then let him go.
I wonder what kind of butterfly/moth he eventually turned into? I should do some research!!
WOAH! That's a crazy picture. It almost doesn't look real! SO COOL!!! As my 3.5 year old would say "Yuuuucky bug!" LOL Also pretty neat to have your 15 minutes (seconds?) of fame for it...
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving the very nice comment :)
Ok, those are AWESOME pics! That thing actually looks cool, and I am NOT a bug person. It looks kind of cartoonish (which might be what is cute about it) since its head is larger than its body. Very cool!!!
It looks like an alien! Great picture.
That thing looks better than some of the weathermen reporting the weather. Too cool that it made it on TV.
Hi! thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting! I luv me some comment love :)
I think that caterpillar is the cutest thing I have ever seen. I want to keep him in my pocket!
Thanks for the cool image and the smile!
That is one scary caterpillar. How hard was it to get that shot?
Lindsay--I took tons of pictures of it! It was a little difficult to get a decent one b/c the weird little orange things would disappear then come back out again--ew!
That is an amazing photo - I seriously thought it was a cartoon! That's awesome that it was on the news. Nice work!
I thought it was a toy out of a McD's box. Weird!
hey, i deleted my comment on accident. lol! i googled wierd green caterpillar with orange tongue, haha. i think he is a tiger swallowtail caterpillar. =0) super cute though!
Oh cool! Thanks Andrea--I'm going to look it up!
I was babysitting today and the little girl that I was watching found one of them on the side walk! I was shocked because it looked like a cartoon! The one we found was brown and not as cute. But the eyes(or eye-like things) on ours were the prettiest lime green. and it had beautiful purple dots on it back! I was trying to find out what it was called when I came across your site!
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
The "tongue" is called an osmeterium and is unique to swallowtail butterflies. The specimen you have is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.
It is useful to try everything in practise anyway and I like that here it's always possible to find something new. :)
OMG i found one of thoose in my back yard and i keep it it went into a cacoon after a few months my mom trough it out. URG i got so mad!
Today my husband was mowing the grass and he found one of these guys can anyone tell me what kind of caterpillar this is and what kind of BEAUTIFUL butterfly/moth would this be. This guy is FREAKY looking but Totally looks like the picture.. My daughter told me to look online so I did and than she pointed out the caterpillar and sure enough that was it when I went to go see it.
