Freaky Caterpillar: Friday Foto Fiesta!

I'm always very excited to participate in Candid Carrie's Foto Fiesta!

This week I want share some pics of this totally bizarre caterpillar we found in our backyard. It was so weird-looking and had these kooky protrusions (antennae?) that made it look like a snake tongue plus markings that look like eyes! Check it out:

Have you ever seen anything like that before? The funny thing is that one of our local weathermen has this nightly thing where people email him "weather pics"--nature shots, etc. and he puts them on the air. So he used our caterpillar pics one night and it ended up being this really funny bit of banter with the weather guy and the news anchors. My husband and I were laughing so hard we were crying!

Thank you Carrie and thanks, Everybody for stopping by!!

I've trained myself to look away when your site pops up and then I know how many clicks to move right and down to avoid the clown.

That awesome bug made the news? How cool for you guys! Let's hope all your MCRish peeps stay off the news, too!

And as always, thanks for playing ;)

I have seen a caterpiller like that before. It was pretty cool. It is a defense mechanism to keep predators away.

I honestly thought it was a fake bug you placed until you told us about the weatherman story. It really is an odd looking bug. Good pic! Found you through Carrie.

Freaky is definitely the word for it! Can't let my 6-year-old see that or she'll want one.

That caterpillar is amazing! I love it! It looks like something out of a cartoon! Is it weird that the clown at the top of the page scares the crap out of me?? LOL!!

OMG I'm with Carrie here, I'm NOT a fan of clowns, LOL But I'm a big girl and I'll do my best to deal;)~

That is for real a real life caterpillar you had in your yard? Get out!!! When my son gets home I am going to need to remember to show him this, he is my buggy kid...this will, no doubt, impress him more than you know! LOL

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Seriously, that thing is for reals? It looks like a toy.

From the side, he's kinda cute! He looks so tiny, how on earth did you ever spot him?

Jennifer said...

He was totally for realz! My son (Gooser)spotted him when we were playing outside. He really wanted to keep him and we brought him in and let him crawl around on the kitchen counter for awhile, but then let him go.

I wonder what kind of butterfly/moth he eventually turned into? I should do some research!!

WOAH! That's a crazy picture. It almost doesn't look real! SO COOL!!! As my 3.5 year old would say "Yuuuucky bug!" LOL Also pretty neat to have your 15 minutes (seconds?) of fame for it...

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving the very nice comment :)

Ok, those are AWESOME pics! That thing actually looks cool, and I am NOT a bug person. It looks kind of cartoonish (which might be what is cute about it) since its head is larger than its body. Very cool!!!

It looks like an alien! Great picture.

That thing looks better than some of the weathermen reporting the weather. Too cool that it made it on TV.

That is one scary caterpillar. How hard was it to get that shot?

Jennifer said...

Lindsay--I took tons of pictures of it! It was a little difficult to get a decent one b/c the weird little orange things would disappear then come back out again--ew!

That is an amazing photo - I seriously thought it was a cartoon! That's awesome that it was on the news. Nice work!

I was babysitting today and the little girl that I was watching found one of them on the side walk! I was shocked because it looked like a cartoon! The one we found was brown and not as cute. But the eyes(or eye-like things) on ours were the prettiest lime green. and it had beautiful purple dots on it back! I was trying to find out what it was called when I came across your site!

Anonymous said...

Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!

Unknown said...

The "tongue" is called an osmeterium and is unique to swallowtail butterflies. The specimen you have is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.

It is useful to try everything in practise anyway and I like that here it's always possible to find something new. :)
