Crazy Time!

I told you a couple weeks ago about my totally wacky watercolor class--in the end there was the lady who looks and acts like a Cuckoo's Nest escapee, the stuttering mailman obsessed with pop-up books, and me.

Tonight when I showed up for class (this was the last one in the session, by the way) the Cuckoo's Nest woman was in the room alone. The lights were mostly off and she was seated at the table just looking down. She didn't respond when I said hi or when I tried to make conversation about finding the light switches. She just sat there...

So I went about my business--turning on lights, getting my paints out, filling up my water container.

She didn't budge--totally motionless.

A few minutes later, the front desk attendant came in to say that there was a change of location and the class was going to be conducted in the library downstairs. So I started packing my things up--but this woman was still just staring down at the table. I started wondering if I needed to repeat the information to her.

But the second I stood up, this woman bolted out the door ahead of me--like at top speed! She tore down the stairs and bypassed the library--heading for the exit. I started to say something, thinking maybe she didn't know where she was supposed to go--but she kind of glared at me and flew out the front door into the night.

Then the desk attendant ran after her and called out as she was running down the driveway. She asked if the woman was coming back and Crazy-Time responded "I haven't decided!"

My watercolor teacher was all like ???? and started to get all worried because obviously this woman isn't playing with a full deck and she was concerned for her safety--she said that usually someone is there waiting to drive her home.

So then it turned into a free-for-all of calls being made to the woman's home and people driving around searching for her.

About an hour later we got a call that she was back at home. We were told that she thought the class was canceled (????).

Unfortunately, the mailman didn't make an appearance tonight which is disappointing, as he certainly would have added to the freak show aspect of the evening's events!

I don't know if I would actually want to go or if I just want you to video the class so I can be amazed in the confines of my own house! You're a brave woman for going back every time!

At least you're not in a class of boring people!

OMG that is strange but yes it does sound like mental illness. I guess she couldn't deal with the fact the class might have been cancelled. However, she most likely could not have functioned in a new room either.

What scares me is that you never know if these people are going to be violent.

I worked in the mental health field for eight years (case manager for people with mental illness). This reminds me of so many memories, me searching for someone and such. Especially the time one of my clients tried to run away from me and I grabbed on to her coat and slid along the ground. Yeah, I'm brilliant.

My friend Maria works at the State hospital in the Mental Ward. She has some amazing stories. I think this lady may belong there....

Whenever I start thinking I'm truly crazy, I hear something like that and it makes me feel better. Although there are probably a dozen other blogs out there with a similar story, only I'm the crazy one they're talking about!

This poor lady needs some help! I wonder if her family realizes the extent of her, um...issues?!

Wow...just wow. I kinda want to join that class, but maybe on second thought, I just like hearing about it from you, better. Seems safer that way. *lol*
