I had a scare today with Gooser. His teacher called me this morning and said that during snacktime he started choking on the orange he was eating (or more specifically, a Clementine).
The kids eat these non-stop at home and I always break all the little segments apart for Gooser, but I guess he put a super large piece in his mouth and didn't chew it enough.
The teacher said his face started turning really red and she was preparing to do the Heimlich when he was able to cough it up.
Then she took him to the nurse to have his throat checked--and he was fine.
How scary though!! I was freaked out when she called and I could tell she was really scared too.
I'm constantly telling the kids "take small bites!" "chew it up!" Especially when they're eating things like apples, pretzels or hot dogs--but I'm usually not paranoid about stuff like oranges!
So I thought I'd use this scary episode as a reminder to everyone--remind your kids to be careful!! It also couldn't hurt to take a course in CPR and the Heimlich--I took one ages ago but I think I need a refresher course. My sister and I are going to sign up for one soon.
In other news--I found this fun/funny blog called Living Oprah. The premise is that the woman takes every bit of advice that Oprah gives--what to wear, eat, buy, etc. and does it in her own life as a challenge to see if following Oprah's advice helps you live your "best life." It sounds like a pretty intriguing idea so I will be checking out her blog!

Poor Gooser, and poor you, what a fright. My 3yo has a bad habit of stuffing food in her mouth.
Doing CPR courses is a good idea, get your hubbys to do it too, after all, you are not always there, and might even need it yourself one day, just knowing the basics can help save a life.
Sorry to sound preachy, but a lot of drownings have been happening over here lately.. one father who lost his son in a dam had no idea of CPR... how helpless he must have felt.
I am so glad he is alright..sounds like we both had scary days!
Gosh, we were just eating clementines last night! Scary!
I am CPR trained and so is my hubby, but I always worry that in the heat of the moment especially being our kids, that I would forget everything, but at least I do know all the techniques!
oranges and hotdogs are my two scariest food. I am so glad he is OK!
So scary! Glad he was able to cough it up.
I keep thinking I need to take a CPR class. Thanks for the reminder!
How scary! I'm so scared of Kaylee, choking, too, and not being able to help her. I'm glad he's okay. I'll have to check out that Oprah blog. Sounds intriguing.
It's pretty frightening.. had a similar incident with an offending carrot once...
So glad Gooser is ok - how scary for the teacher, for you and for him. It must have really scared him. I'll check out the link you shared - interesting.
Have a fun day!
Choking freaks me out!!! I always wanted to learn how to do Child CPR & the Hymlich...
gotta check out the Oprah blog...
Just a note of interest...take the CPR course through your local Red Cross! All of that money stays in your community to help those in need! Oh and come by for your membership to the cool school later today!
you never can be too careful.
I did use the heimlich on my son after I picked him up and spun him around after I thought he was done eating his meatloaf. I caused him to choke...it was horrible.
I'm so glad Gooser is o.k.! I think I'll check into those CPR classes. It's been awhile since I've been through it.
So glad to hear that Gooser is o.k! Things like that are terrifying ... good for you getting the refresher course. You never know when you might need to know that stuff.
omg, i just took a cpr course for my teacher training program.
im alwasy afraid ill freeze in situations like that.
OH NO!
Merrick chocked once on medicine when he was an infant, and I am sooo grateful I knew/know infant CPR!
You never know when you will need it!
How scary! I'm happy Gooser is doing fine!
About 20 years ago, my DH saved his dad by doing the Heimlich on him. His dad had choked on a martini olive.
I'm glad Gooser is alright! How scary!
Omg-I'm so glad he's alright!
Whew! So glad little Goose-man is OK!
You're right... it's good to be prepared!
My husband is uber-paranoid about the kids choking. I want him to take a First Aid class so hopefully he'll feel more secure that he could help in a choking emergency.
So glad Gooser is ok, and thanks for that word of warning!
